About this project
GOTR Council: Girls on the Run NYC
Project Created on: 03/13/2017
Project Type: SoleMates
On March 10th 2000, I was road tripping to Vegas along with a some young (and stupid) friends of mine, and we thought it would be a great idea to drink a bottle of vodka on the way. It was not a great idea, and we never made it to our destination. The driver rolled the car, I was thrown from the vehicle, and landed on my knees. I had just turned 22.
Though after the initial medical evaluation it was uncertain if I would ever walk again, I came back strong. It took six surgeries and a year and a half of rehab, but I only missed one ski season and have been able to live a normal, reasonably athletic, lifestyle since. However, I was never able to run.
In the years since, I was also well aware that I would need full knee replacement at a relatively young age. After being inspired by a friend’s marathon, I set a far reaching goal: if I could hold off on knee replacement until there was an option I could run on, maybe I could run a marathon, too. And when the surgery became necessary, this goal completely transformed the experience. From the first time they got me out of bed in the hospital and I hobbled to the end of the hall on crutches, in my mind I was already in training.
And here we are. It is now two years since my knee replacement and I am officially registered for the 2017 New York Marathon.
Because of all of the help and support I’ve received, in both my initial recovery from the accident and in pushing myself to live beyond my injuries in the years since, it's also been important to me to use this experience as a way to lend support elsewhere. I’ve chosen to run on behalf of Girls on the Run, via their running charity SoleMates. Girls on the Run uses running to inspire fitness and personal growth in girls all over the country. Please consider supporting them, and my long anticipated marathon run, by donating via this fundraising page.
Thank you, and much love!!
