About this project
GOTR Council: Girls on the Run NYC
Project Created on: 11/29/2017
Project Type: Limitless Potential
On March 18, 2018, I am running in the NYC Half Marathon as part of the Girls on the Run NYC SoleMates team. Your donations will help girls participated in a healthy & confident experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Why do I want to be a SoleMate
My mother started coaching with Girls on the Run in 2002 through Wake Co Cooperative Extension and then later, after she began teaching at Banks Road Elementary, started GOTR at her school. In addition to initiating the program, she also put over 30 girls in a new pair of running shoes through various donations. It is because of my mother's dedicated service to her community that has inspired me to be a SoleMate. I am not only raising money for an amazing organization, but am committing myself to finishing a half marathon and raising awareness for how critical GOTR is to create a foundation for young women to be confident and a beneficial part of their community.
Each young woman gains a better understanding of who she is and what's important to her, recognition of the value of team work and healthy relationships, confidence to overcome the obstacles she faces, and an appreciation for how she can positively impact and shape our world. Even more remarkable? A national independent study conducted by a youth development expert provided strong evidence that Girls on the Run is superior in promoting positive youth development and makes a stronger impact than organized sports & PE classes in teaching life skills. Your support of my fundraiser is critical in order to reach girls and ensure that Girls on the Run is accessible to all girls here in NYC who wish to participate.
