About this project
GOTR Council: Girls on the Run Washington DC
Project Created on: 06/13/2018
Project Type: SoleMates
I am Carolyn Kowal-Safron, and I have been an avid runner for about three years. I started back in middle school, barely able to run a mile, and eventually trained to complete my first half marathon back in 2016. Last September, I signed up to help coach a Girls on the Run team in my local community. I will admit, I did not expect the program to have such a lasting impact on my life. I cannot even begin to explain the feeling of watching all of the girls on my team cross the finish line of their first 5k after ten weeks of hard work.
I just finished helping to coach my second season, and it was nothing short of amazing. Watching the girls transform and become more confident in themselves and their abilities was priceless.
After running a few half marathons, I am hungry for a challenge. So, here I am, scheduled to run the Marine Corps Marathon on October 28th, 2018 in Washington DC. It is a 26.2 Mile road race. However, unlike my other races who have mostly only impacted myself, I want to use my passion for a greater good; and what better way than an organization that I am already involved in???
Here is where you are needed. I am looking to raise at least $500 by August 1st for Girls on the Run. Here is how your contributions can make a lasting difference on the lives of young girls:
ü $12 = race medal and water bottle for 1 girl
ü $24 – race medal, water bottle and t-shirt for 1 girl
ü $65 = 1 pair of running shoes for 1 girl
ü 150 = coach bag supplies for 3 teams
ü $320 = Empower 1 girl for a season
ü $640 = Empower 2 girls for a season
ü $1,000 = major donor status and supports program scholarships, t-shirts, and
medals for 3 girls
ü $4,500 = Empowers 1 full GOTR-DC team of 15 girls (1 season)
If anyone were to tell me back In 2015 that in a few years I would be training for a marathon, I would honestly laugh in their face. In 2015, I could not even run a mile. Now I am looking to run 26.2. I had low self-esteem, was the slowest in everything I did, and did not expect much of myself. If I had this program growing up, I can guarantee you my entire outlook on both myself and my life would be completely different. Despite this, I was given a second chance to get it right when I found the motivation deep inside of me to change my life for the better and commit to a healthy lifestyle. I hope to show and inspire people that it does not matter where you start, as you can truly accomplish anything if you have the will to try. By being involved with Girls on the Run, I hope to show young girls that they are capable of so much more than they could ever imagine, despite what anyone else thinks or says.
Thank you in advance for both your monetary contributions and your support as I embark on this 20 week journey that is sure to change my life, and hopefully the lives of many others as well!
The organization describes its mission as follows: "We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running."Give Now
