About this project
GOTR Council: Girls on the Run NYC
Project Created on: 01/19/2017
Project Type: SoleMates
Hi there! My name is Shirley and I am running the NYC Marathon on November 5th, 2017 to raise money for Girls on the Run NYC as a SoleMate/volunteer! Girls on the Run is a nonprofit that is committed to building girls into confident, motivated, healthy, socially-aware women through mentorship, teamwork, and the achievement of running a 5k! Along with personally relating to the organization's mission and core values, as a sister of Gamma Phi Beta, I also have a close attachment to GOTR as our sorority's philanthropy.
I realized I loved running in 5th grade, when I noticed I was the only one who enjoyed the mile in gym class. I've been running ever since, through cross country and track in middle and high school, and now simply as an outlet to keep me happy and healthy. Running isn't just a sport, but a mindset of positivity and endurance that has helped me face life challenges, significant and otherwise. I recognized that growing up with running, and the friends/teammates/coaches I've met because of it, has strengthened my own confidence in my physical and mental abilities, as well as taught me to empathize and support those around me.
Girls on the Run is dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. This vision has been one close to my heart, even before I became involved with GOTR. Whether or not you like to run, I'm sure many of you had after-school programs, activities, coaches/instructors/teammates growing up that were your outlets and had a positive impact on your life. I hope to give even one girl the opportunity I had and provide this program to the many girls who cannot afford the costs. Currently, 60% of the girls in the GOTR NYC program come from low-income families. Every girl, regardless of background, should have access to mentorship and support that inspires self-confidence, positive relationships, and personal aspirations.
Please consider making a donation to help me reach my goal, support this amazing organization and empower girls! Every dollar counts (and is tax-deductible)!
To put it into context:
$35 can sponsor a pair of running shoes for 1 girl
$150 can fund healthy snacks and a pair of running shoes for 3 girls in our program
$300 can support a full season scholarship, and healthy snacks and running shoes for one girl
$1,500 can support 5 girls (equivalent to half a team!) for a full season!
All the best,
