About this project

GOTR Council: Girls on the Run New Jersey North

Project Created on: 08/04/2015

Project Type: SoleMates

My name is Maggie a.k.a Coach Leppie and I am running the Newport Half Marathon to raise scholarship money for Girls on the Run.

This fall will be my 3rd season of coaching a Girls on the run Team in Northern New Jersey.  Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization for 3rd-8th grade students.  The mission of the program is to teach girls plain and simply that they CAN.  We help the girls get a better understanding of who they are, what they can be, and what makes them unique.  Over the course of the 10 week program girls are given lessons twice a week that help them feel more confident, treat each other with care and compassion, and make a meaningful contribution to society.  Every session we incorporate running into their lessons and at the end of the program the girls participate in a 5k run.  Watching the girls transform over 10 weeks and then crossing the finish line has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Not only has this program made me a role model to these girls, but it has also taught me so much more about being confident, comfortable in my own skin, and want to help others in my community.  I fight daily with my mom and my dear friend to battle breast cancer.  If we can shape these girls to take charge of their own lives and never give up on yourself and what you believe in through 10 weeks, we can conquer anything!

This is my story, and this is MY fight song:
